King of King's School

Take a tour of the school

The King of Kings School (Escola Rei Dos Reis) was established in a rural community on the outskirts of Beira, Mozambique’s second largest city. A pre-school class commenced in 2001 and the primary school began in 2003. Generous donations from supporters in Australia enabled the construction of permanent buildings to provide primary classrooms.

In 2008, the first secondary class commenced with over 100 students in Year 8. Successive secondary classes were added until the full secondary enrolment from Year 8 to Year 12 was reached in 2013. Additional classrooms, an Administration building and a Science & Technology building have been constructed to provide the necessary facilities for the school.

A total of around 1800 students from Prep to Year 12 attend the school. We are sad to say that sometimes we have to turn away up to 500 students who arrive to enrol but whom there are no places for. A modest tuition fee is charged to encourage school families to develop both a sense of ownership in the school and responsibility for their students’ education. Special financial consideration is given to orphans and those from needy families who receive a fee reduction or pay no fees at all.

The majority of funds needed for the operational costs of the school are received from the donations of international supporters. Ultimately, it is planned that the school will be able to achieve local sustainability, responsible for its daily running costs.

Mozambique continues to face significant challenges with over 1 million children unable to access education and almost half of the population unable to read. With your help, Mission Educate continues to face these challenges, one life at a time.

The Staff and Curriculum

The School Principal, Alford Ncube leads a dedicated team of around 50 staff. Alford is a well-respected educational leader in Mozambique and has a great heart for his students. He was born in Zimbabwe but was trained in Mozambique where he has lived with his family for over 16 years. He speaks English and Portuguese fluently as well as a number of other African dialects.

All schools in Mozambique must follow the curriculum set by the Mozambican government. Teaching is conducted in Portuguese, and English is now being taught as a second language. Students sit for national exams in Years 7, 10 & 12. They are unable to proceed to higher grades if they do not pass these exams.

Mozambican students study Portuguese, Mathematics, Geography, History, Science, English, Civics Education as well as lessons in Physical Education, Music and Computing. Students at the King of Kings School also study French and Christian Education. They have opportunities to participate in competitive soccer teams and be part of the school’s Worship Team.
